Stop Worrying Tips

  • Ask yourself "What is the worst thing that can happen?
  • Ask yourself " What are the chances of that really happening?"
  • Set aside a specific time of day for worrying. For example, tell yourself you will only worry from 6-7 PM each day. Silly? Of course it is. But so is worrying about things you can't change. A specific "worry time" will help you keep things in perspective.
  • Talk to yourself. Tell yourself to breathe. Tell yourself that it will be ok. Tell yourself that you are capable of getting through this without a cigarette.
  • Don't imagine the worst. Imagine what you would like to occur.
  • Read. There are great self-help books out. Go to your local library or bookstore and ask for recommendations.
  • If you can't eliminate the problem, change the way you think about the problem.
  • Talk to someone who has been through a similar experience. Ask what helped get them through.
  • Ask for help. If your stress is overwhelming and you are unable to control it you need to talk to your family physician. There are medications to help you cope with the stress in your life.
  • Remember that a cigarette will not change anything. After the cigarette, you will still have the same situation and you will still need to deal with it. If you smoke, you will have the added stress of starting over.
